How to move a mountain

When a person decides to make changes in their life they always start of well but because of the lack of results they quickly lose their way, get bored and stop.

We are all guilty of this, at different points in our lives and it doesn't matter who you are the only way to achieve your goals is to be smart about it. The failure is there right from the start, the goal setting. We look at the task whether it is weight loss, academic achievement, career progression and we set ourselves a target. "By next year I will be a size 10". "In two years I want to run my own department", "I want to get a PhD by the time I am 25 researching a cure for cancer,".

These are all great ambitions and when achieved will make for great achievement, however these goals are just like the idea of moving a mountain. It's a grand ambitions but in itself insurmountable.

Confucius said:“The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”

It's the same with personal growth and change. It's about making small insignificant changes that build up. The art of success is in the planning and the goal and target setting, but before that it is to be honest with your self and what is your starting point is.

Nothing destroys self-worth, self-acceptance and self-love faster than denying what you feel. Without feelings, you would not know where you are in life. Nor would you know what areas you need to work on. Honor your feelings. Allow yourself to feel them.

The best advice for anyone starting a journey of self-improvement is to explore who you are and what your goals are. What makes you, you. What are your strengths and your weakness. What are the risks what will prevent you from moving your own mountain?

Any business that is starting this process will do a Strengths, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat analysis and it's just as important that you do it too before the start of your own journey. Your goals need to be smart otherwise very quickly you will lose your way and struggle to make the transformation you want in your life.

A SMART plan is Small, measurable, achievable, relevant, Time bound. So when you set your life goal (become a size 10 by next year)  in order to achieve you will need to set your self a short goal target (by next week I will lose 2 pounds, I will do this by not eating candy and going for a 20 minute walk 2 times in that time).

These small changes are not hard to make but they are the foundation of any plans. Here you are moving the very smallest stones on your mountain. Each week you build on your targets and goals stretching what you did the week before, before long you will no longer have a mountain but 2 hills.

The constant stretch and reward process will give you the motivation to keep the effort as you will after a few weeks see real change in your life.
